90年代後半からブラックメタルアンダーグラウンドに潜伏してきた者にとって、BURNING WINDSという名はカルト的な重みを持って響くはずだ。1997年に結成されたこのバンドは、NecroDanという一人の人物による唯一の創作領域であり、Masochist、SUMMON、Wind of the Black Mountainsといった忌まわしき存在を生み出したアメリカの荒野、ミシガン州を出自とする。BURNING WINDSはまさにこの音の系譜に連なり、最も醜く、最も原始的なブラックメタルを最も異端な方法で頑固に追求し続けている。多くの者がこのバンドを初めて知ったのは、Paul Ledneyの極めて短命に終わったNecroscopeレーベルと、フルレングスと見紛う『The Flame of Lucifer』を通じてであった——ここにはPROFANATICAとりわけHAVOHEJとの美学的な繋がりも見て取れる——しかし「見紛う」というのは、その録音がアルバム長でありながらEPとして扱われていたという意味においてであり、2005年のクラシック『Cease to Exist』コンピレーションについても同様のことが言える。数十年が重なる中、NecroDanは新たな、あるいは「新たな」録音を断続的に発表し続けたが、常に最もアンダーグラウンドな形で、一切の喧伝を排し、いかなる「神秘」の演出やシーンへの関与よりも、私的かつ独学的なあり方を好んだ。
今十年においては活動の兆しが増し——2022年には3本のデモも発表された——しかしBURNING WINDSの初のフルレングスは永らく幻のままであった。今、長年のファンであるWEREWOLF RECORDSの庇護のもと、それはついに実現した：『Hell and Damnation』、NecroDanの最も原始的かつ挑戦的な作品と言えるだろう。最も熱狂的なファンでさえその限界を試すかのように、このデビューアルバムの全トラックには固有の不穏なイントロが設けられている。そこからNecroDanは、崩壊するブラックメタルの熱に浮かされた夢幻の中で、変則的で癲癇的な歩みを狂気的に刻みながら、聴き手の期待をさらに粉砕していく。ブラックメタルアンダーグラウンドの異端的な深みに不慣れな者には、『Hell and Damnation』の大半あるいは全てが「曲」ではなく「スケッチ」に映るかもしれない。しかしアルバムの9つの中心トラックには、ある種の、著しく歪んだ反天才性が宿っている。即興的であれ衝動的であれ、それは問題ではない：BURNING WINDSは汚濁と腐臭に満ちた空気の中で転げ、躓き、唸り、HellhammerとBeheritの原始主義をその最も粗野な形にまで芸術的に剥ぎ取っていく。これほどの精神的領域は他に存在しない……もっとも、そこに踏み込む胆力があればの話だが。
当然のごとく、NecroDanは『Hell and Damnation』が彼の唯一のアルバムとなり、BURNING WINDSはその後墓へと戻るだろうと示唆している。それゆえ、最も強靭な精神を持つ者は今すぐ踏み込み始めることを勧める；NecroDanはどちらでも構わない。もし貴様が偽物なら、炎の中で燃え死に、その灰はサタニックな風に攫われるだろう！
For those who've lurked within the black metal underground since the late '90s, the name BURNING WINDS should carry the cultest cachet. Formed in 1997, the band is the sole creative province of one NecroDan, hailing from the American wasteland of Michigan, which unbirthed such foul entities as Masochist, SUMMON, and Wind of the Black Mountains. BURNING WINDS are very much of this sonic lineage, defiantly utilizing the ugliest, most primitive black metal in the most unorthodox of ways. For many, the band first came to attention / infamy via Paul Ledney's extremely short-lived Necroscope label and the seemingly full-length The Flame of Lucifer - here, also underlining the aesthetic links to PROFANATICA and especially HAVOHEJ - but "seemingly" in the sense that that recording was album length and yet otherwise considered an EP; the same could be said for 2005's classic Cease to Exist compilation. As the decades slogged on, NecroDan would intermittently emerge with a new / "new" recording, always in the most underground manner and with absolutely zero fanfare, preferring the private and autodidactic over any sort of cultivated "mystery" or scene involvement.
While this decade has seen more signs of activity - three demos in 2022, even - a first BURNING WINDS full-length has forever proven elusive. Until now, under the auspices of longtime fans WEREWOLF RECORDS: Hell and Damnation, arguably NecroDan's most primitive & challenging record yet. Testing the limits of even the diehardest, every track on this debut album features its own unsettling intro. From there, NecroDan further mulches expectations with a fever dream of disintegrating black metal, maniacally moving at an off-time, apoplectic gait. Those unaccustomed to the unorthodox depths of the black metal underground might consider most / all of Hell and Damnation as "sketches" rather than songs, but there's a certain, severely skewed anti-genius at work across the album's nine central tracks. Improvisatory or impulsive, it matters not: BURNING WINDS tumble, stumble, and grumble within a foul & filthy atmosphere, artfully stripping down Hellhammer-meets-Beherit primitivism to its rudest shapes. There's really no other headspace around quite like this...that is, if you have the constitution to step in in the first place.
Naturally, NecroDan has intimated that Hell and Damnation might be his only album and that BURNING WINDS hereafter will return to the grave. As such, those with the strongest constitution are encouraged to begin stepping now; NecroDan doesn't give a fuck either way. IF YOU ARE FALSE, BURN AND DIE IN FIRE AND YOUR ASHES WILL BE TAKEN BY THE SATANIC WINDS!
