AS SAHARは1987年頃よりその活動を開始し、3本のデモを発表したあとファーストアルバム"Phenomistik"を録音した。そしてこのアルバムは今日「イースタン・ブラックメタル」とよばれるジャンルの重要作品として評価される事となる。年月を経て多くの新しいバンド達の模範ともなった"Phenomistik"はイースタン・ブラックメタルを代表する作品として様々なフォーマットで何度も再発され現在も好セールスをあげている。日出る国にてイースタン・ブラックメタルの憤怒を目撃せよ！

シンガポールブラックメタルの雄、AS SAHARとの出会いは1993年くらい、当時OCCULT GRINDER ZINEという内容は最高に地下深く、印刷はワープロ切り貼りではない素晴らしくプロフェッショナルなレイアウトで読み応えのあったファンジンの主催、かつ、大阪カルトドゥーム、ブラックメタルバンドOHURA MAZDOのリーダーであった竹内氏がやっていたCOCYTUS PROMOTIONというディストロで取り扱っていたデモ・テープでした。その後、再発もされ今では簡単にインターネットでも聴くことができる時代ですが、当時は非常に新鮮な出会いでした。東南アジア、特にメタルシーンが長く続いていて独自の進化を遂げているマレー系メタルは独特なメロディ、楽曲が特徴だったと思います。SIL KHANNAZ、BRAIN DEAD、SILENT DEATH、NEBIRASなどを代表とするメタルシーンの中で、AS SAHARは、ひたすら暗黒、プリミティブを突き詰めながらも、マレーメタルの旋律を散りばめ、独創的でした。マレーシアのSIL KHANNAZのボーカルJaieの主催するNEBIULA PRODUCTIONSなどがメインで何枚もアルバムをリリースをしていましたが、海外にほとんど流通していなかったこともカルト度を増すのに貢献した感はあります。逆に言えば、国内だけでさばけていたというのはローカルシーンのデカさの証でもあります。AS SAHARの活動歴は長いですが、オリジナルメンバーはベースのMalikのみとなってしまっています。満を持してなのかタイミングが合い、まさかアッサハールが日本盤を出す時が来るのか、来日公演する日が来るのか、と信じられないですがようやく時代が追いついたのかもしれません。(Yutaka Kimura/Bloodbath Records)

AS SAHAR began their activities around 1987, releasing three demos before recording their debut album Phenomistik. This album would go on to be recognized as a landmark work in what is today called "Eastern Black Metal." Having served as a model for many new bands over the years, Phenomistik has been reissued multiple times in various formats as a defining work of Eastern Black Metal, and continues to sell strongly to this day. My encounter with Singapore's black metal titans AS SAHAR dates back to around 1993. At the time, they were being distributed as demo tapes through COCYTUS PROMOTION, run by Mr. Takeuchi — who was also the organizer of OCCULT GRINDER ZINE, a fanzine with an exceptionally underground ethos and a remarkably professional layout (not the typical word-processor cut-and-paste style), as well as the leader of Osaka cult doom/black metal band OHURA MAZDO. The recordings have since been reissued and are now easily accessible online, but back then it was a truly fresh discovery.

Southeast Asian metal — particularly the Malay metal scene, which has evolved uniquely over a long history — was characterized by distinctive melodies and songwriting. Within a scene represented by bands such as SIL KHANNAZ, BRAIN DEAD, SILENT DEATH, and NEBIRAS, AS SAHAR stood out for relentlessly pursuing darkness and primitivism while weaving in Malay metal melodies, making them truly original.

They released numerous albums primarily through NEBULA PRODUCTIONS, run by Jaie (vocalist of Malaysia's SIL KHANNAZ), but the fact that their music was barely distributed outside their home country only added to their cult status. Conversely, the ability to move product domestically alone is testament to the sheer scale of the local scene.

AS SAHAR has a long history, but the only remaining original member is bassist Malik. Whether the timing was finally right or it was long overdue — the idea that AS SAHAR would release a Japanese edition, or even perform live in Japan, once seemed unthinkable. But perhaps the times have finally caught up with them.
